What “crystal” means

In rhinestone listings, “crystal” almost always means glass, and “crystal” as a color means clear. Premium lead-glass crystal is made by a handful of brands and priced several times higher than standard glass. Resin stones labelled “crystal” are resin in a clear color — check the material line. Where crystal is worth it

Attaching crystals

Hotfix crystals carry glue on the back and suit washable fabric (How to use a hotfix applicator). Flatback crystals need glue: Gem-Tac or fabric glue on fabric, an E6000-type adhesive on hard and flexing surfaces (The best glue for rhinestones). Crystals are heavier than resin, so large, fully covered pieces need a strong base and a well-cured adhesive.

Caring for crystal work

Clean with a soft brush and a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking, harsh cleaners and solvents, which can attack glue and foil backings. Store costumes flat or hanging so stones don’t grind against each other.
