How to bedazzle heels

What to know first

Heels are usually satin, faux leather or glitter-coated synthetic: surfaces that heat and some solvents can mark. They also flex across the vamp. That rules out hotfix, calls for a flexible adhesive tested on a hidden spot, and makes glass the usual choice because the pieces are meant to catch the light. Stiletto heels themselves are rigid and the easiest place to start.

What you need

• Glass flatbacks in two or three sizes
• Flexible E6000-type adhesive with a fine nozzle
• Wax pick-up pen and tweezers
• Toothpicks for glue on tight curves

Step by step

1. Test the glue on the inside of the heel counter or under the insole edge.
2. Start with the heel itself: rigid, easy and a good practice area.
3. Outline edges with a slightly larger stone.
4. Fill with mixed sizes to follow curves without gaps.
5. Leave the flex line across the vamp lighter.
6. Cure fully before wearing.

Avoid

• Heat of any kind
• Too much glue on satin: it seeps and stains
• Wearing before the glue has cured
