Hair gems and bedazzled hair

Rhinestones moved from cups and phone cases to hairlines. Hair is the one surface where the glue question really matters.

Updated November 2026 · Canada

Where the look came from

Bustle called it in August 2026: rhinestones were "coming for the slick-back", with creators scattering stars, hearts and mixed-size stones across gelled hair in deliberately uneven placement (Bustle, 25 Aug 2026). It is the same impulse as Gemmaxxing: how to gem-maxx anything — more stones, less symmetry — applied to a surface nobody was decorating a year ago. Kylie Jenner's gem-covered birthday in August 2026 is the moment most reporting traces the wider trend to (Fortune, 28 Aug 2026).

What actually holds a gem in hair

Hair is not a surface you glue to — it is thousands of loose strands that move. What holds a gem is mostly the style underneath: gel, pomade or strong hairspray worked through and allowed to set firm. The gem's own adhesive backing grips that shell rather than the hair itself.

  • Self-adhesive gems are the whole trend. Press, hold a few seconds, leave alone.
  • Lash adhesive for loose stones with no backing: it is formulated to sit against skin for a day.
  • Hairspray over the top, held well back, buys a few more hours.

Craft adhesives have no place in hair. B7000 and E6000 are solvent glues for hard surfaces — see the glue guide — and a stone set in hair with either usually comes out with the hair attached.

Hair gems

Stick-on gems for hair and skin — no craft glue anywhere near either.

Placing them so they read

  1. Slick and set the style completely before a single gem goes on; gems on wet gel slide.
  2. Work from the hairline back, following the direction of the slick.
  3. Anchor with two or three big stones, then scatter smaller ones into the gaps — uneven beats symmetrical here.
  4. Keep the back of the head sparse if you will sit against a headrest or pillow.
  5. Photograph it before you go out: this is a look that reads best in a flash.

The same stones work on face and body — the adhesive rules are identical.

Getting them out

Oil is the solvent for this job. Work coconut, olive or a cleansing oil into the gem and the hair around it, wait a minute, then slide the stone down the strand rather than pulling it against the root. Shampoo twice afterwards to clear the gel and the oil together. Expect to lose a few strands — expect to lose far more if the stone went on with anything stronger than lash glue.

Common questions

What glue do you use for hair gems?

Self-adhesive gems need none. For loose stones use a lash adhesive made for skin. Never craft glue such as B7000, E6000 or super glue.

How long do hair gems last?

An evening to a day on a firmly set slick-back. Sleeping on them is what ends it.

How do you get rhinestones out of hair?

Soak the stone and the hair around it in oil, wait, then slide it down the strand. Shampoo twice afterwards.

Do hair gems damage your hair?

Stick-on gems and lash adhesive usually come out with oil and a few lost strands. Craft glue is what causes real damage, and often means cutting.
