Hotfix vs glue-on rhinestones

Both are flat-backed. The difference is where the glue comes from, and that decides what they will stick to.

When hotfix is the better choice

  • Anything that goes in the washing machine: T-shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, denim jackets, tote bags.
  • Large lettering or logos, using a rhinestone transfer and a heat press.
  • Projects with children nearby where you want no solvent glue (the wand itself is hot, so an adult should use it).

When glue-on is the better choice

  • Hard and non-porous surfaces: tumblers, phone cases, mirrors, frames, guitars.
  • Heat-sensitive materials: nylon, vinyl, faux leather, satin shoes, EVA foam.
  • High-stretch costumes, where a flexible glue copes with movement better.
  • Resin jelly stones, which don’t come in hotfix.

The adhesive decides whether it lasts: see The best glue for rhinestones.

Gem-Tac

Water-based, dries clear; made for fabric and porous surfaces.

Heat tests and mixed projects

Synthetic fabrics vary. Before you commit, set one hotfix stone somewhere hidden. If the fabric goes shiny, puckers or melts, switch to glue. On mixed projects — a denim jacket with a vinyl patch, say — use both: hotfix on the denim, glue on the patch.

Hotfix stones can be glued if you run out of heat-safe fabric; the glue layer on the back simply gives the adhesive something to grip. Plain flatbacks can never be heat-set.

Common questions

Is hotfix better than glue?

On washable, heat-tolerant fabric, usually yes: cleaner, faster and more wash-resistant. On anything else glue is the only option.

Can I use an iron instead of a hotfix wand?

For a rhinestone transfer, yes, with a pressing cloth and firm pressure, though a heat press gives more even results. For single stones a wand is far easier.

How can I tell if a rhinestone is hotfix?

Turn it over. Hotfix stones have a grey, dull glue layer over the foil. Non-hotfix flatbacks show bare silver or gold foil.

Do hotfix rhinestones work on polyester?

Often, but test first: some polyesters scorch or go shiny at hotfix temperatures.
