How to bedazzle a water bottle

Metal and hard plastic bottles work. Soft squeezy bottles don’t.

What to know first

Bottles are made from very different plastics. Many squeezy sports bottles are polyethylene or polypropylene, which glue barely grips. Rigid copolyester and metal bottles bond well. And like a tumbler, a bottle meets your mouth, so no craft glue near the spout.

  • Hand wash only. Dishwashers combine heat, water and detergent, which is what breaks glue bonds.
  • No craft adhesive we know of is certified for food contact. Keep stones and glue well below the rim, where lips touch.

What you need

  • Metal or rigid plastic bottle
  • Resin rhinestones
  • E6000-type adhesive
  • Fine sandpaper and isopropyl alcohol

Step by step

  1. Check the recycling code on the base: 2 (HDPE) and 5 (PP) are poor for glue.
  2. Scuff and clean the outside.
  3. Mask off a band below the neck.
  4. Glue small patches while rotating the bottle in a cradle.
  5. Cure fully and hand wash before use.
