Almost every lost stone comes down to one of seven causes.
| What happens | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stones peel off a smooth case or tumbler in sheets | No surface prep; glossy finish | Scuff lightly, clean with isopropyl alcohol, re-glue |
| Single stones pop off | Glue skinned before placement | Work smaller patches; fresh glue for each |
| Stones lost along bends | Rigid glue on a flexing area | Flexible adhesive; avoid crease lines |
| Stones lost in the wash | General craft glue, or washed too soon | Hotfix or fabric glue; wait for full cure |
| Hotfix stones lift with the wand | Glue not melted | Hold longer; check the tip size |
| Hotfix won’t bond at all | Water-repellent or synthetic coating | Switch to glue |
| Nothing stays on | Silicone or soft plastic | Use a hard case or bottle |
| Glue yellowed and let go | Low-grade glue, heat or sunlight | Better adhesive; keep out of hot cars |

Scrape out any loose old glue, add a tiny dot of the right adhesive, and press a new stone in with a wax pen. On hotfix work, a hotfix stone and the applicator, or a non-hotfix stone and fabric glue, both work.
Most often the powder coat is too smooth or oily, or the glue has skinned. Scuff, clean with isopropyl alcohol and work in small patches.
Use a flexible adhesive, keep stones off the toe crease and heel counter where shoes bend, and let the glue cure fully before wearing.
