How-to
How to remove rhinestones
Heat undoes hotfix. Glue needs softening, patience and a solvent that won’t damage what is underneath.
Hotfix stones on fabric
- Turn the garment inside out and lay it on an ironing board.
- Press with a hot iron over a cloth for 10–20 seconds, or heat individual stones with the applicator.
- While warm, lift stones from the right side with tweezers.
- Soft glue left behind can often be lifted by pressing a scrap of cotton onto the warm spot and peeling it away.
Glued stones on fabric
Water-based fabric glue and Gem-Tac soften with warm water and a long soak; work stones off with a fingernail. Solvent glues are harder: a dab of the solvent recommended on the glue’s own data sheet, tested on a hidden seam first, then gentle scraping. Expect some marking on delicate fabrics.
Phone cases, tumblers and hard surfaces
- Warm a small area with a hair dryer on medium.
- Slide a plastic scraper or old card under the edge of the design and lift.
- Roll remaining glue off with your thumb; many solvent glues come away in rubbery pieces.
- Clean the rest with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth.
Powder-coated tumblers can lose some finish; that is usually the price of a clean restart.
Common questions
Does acetone remove E6000?
Solvents can soften it, but acetone also attacks many plastics, acetate fabrics, some finishes and resin stones. Test on a hidden spot and prefer mechanical removal where possible.
Can you reuse removed rhinestones?
Glass stones clean up well. Hotfix stones can be reused with glue. Resin stones often scratch or cloud and aren’t worth saving.
